Appellate Practice

Cray Huber handles appeals in state and federal courts across the country. In Illinois, our attorneys have served as appellate counsel in hundreds of appeals, encompassing every appellate district, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Outside of Illinois, we are licensed to practice in several other federal courts of appeals and have been admitted pro hac vice in several sister state courts of review.

Our approach with every appeal is to analyze procedural options for reducing the cost and delay normally associated with the appellate process. In addition to serving as counsel of record in appellate matters, we are also available to give second opinions on the appealability and merits of appellate issues in cases handled by others. Functionally, the appellate process begins while a case is still in the trial court. By becoming directly involved in post trial proceedings in the trial court, our appellate lawyers work to ensure that clients’ positions have been properly preserved for later appeal.

Before a notice of appeal has even been filed, we can provide estimates of the likelihood of success on appeal, the cost of defending or prosecuting the appeal and the probable duration of the appellate process. In cases involving an adverse money judgment, we offer counsel and guidance with difficult issues concerning appeal bonds and stays of judgment.
